Credit Card

When moving to Japan in order to work or to study, credit card will come in handy, however it takes time for foreigners to obtain a new credit card after they arrive in Japan. So for the first several months of their stay, they should use credit cards issued in their own countries.

VISA and MasterCard, JCB and AmericanExpress are some of the credit cards which are widely accepted in Japan.

But unlike in the U.S. or in many other European countries, use of credit cards at supermarkets, except department store, or grocery stores is not a very common practice in Japan.

When purchasing daily supplies, food and beverage, it is a better idea to bring some cash along with credit cards.
