International Marriage in Japan

Some foreigners may want to know what procedures are necessary for marrying a Japanese in Japan. When a Japanese and a non-Japanese get married in Japan, they are supposed to follow the Japanese law.

To register an international marriage in Japan, Japanese spouse must submit a copy of family registry certificate (koseki tōhon), and non-Japanese spouse must submit passport, certificate of legal capacity to contract marriage, and alien registration certificate.

Documents required for international marriage differ depending on what country the non-Japanese party is from. International marriage registered in Japan is effective in Japan, but it doesn’t necessarily mean that the marriage automatically becomes effective in the non-Japanese partner’s country. Therefore, international marriage couples should contact the embassy or consular of the country of the non-Japanese wife or husband and check if there are special procedures to make the marriage effective in the partner’s country.
