International Driving Permit

When a foreigner drives a car in Japan, he/she must have an International Driving Permit (kokusai unten menkyoshō) based on the Geneva Convention on Road Traffic.
International Driving Permit issued in a contracting country of the Geneva Convention on Road Traffic allows foreigners to drive a car in Japan for one year after their arrival.
International Driving Permit is regarded as a translation of driver’s license issued in the driver’s home country.
