International Schools

Many international schools in Japan are either incorporated private schools or unauthorized schools. These international schools usually do not follow the first clause of the Article 1 on the School Education Act of Japan, and instead follow the 134 clause of the same Act, being the category of special education schools.

However, newly founded international schools like Makuhari International School (http://mis.ed.jp/index.html) established in the Kaihin-Makuhari district in Chiba prefecture in 2009 now follow the first clause of the Article 1 on the School Education Act of Japan.

In the past, graduation from international schools did not guarantee the eligibility for taking entrance examinations for entering Japanese universities, but this is also changing rapidly. Many international schools these days have been authorized by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology in Japan to grant students eligibility to take entrance examinations for entering Japanese universities.
